Living Frames

On the former commercial site at Hardstrasse 43 in Basel, 3 new residential buildings and a renovated shed hall are being built.
The 3 residential houses will get an optical connection to the adjacent shed hall by the double ridge. The facade as well as the roof will be covered by a corrugated aluminum layer in project-made extrusion profiling.

Project

The facade is the most technically demanding element of the entire building. For the exceptional appearance of “everything from one cast”, an object-specific profile system was specially developed, which functions both as a facade cladding and as a roof covering.
The jointless construction was given special attention with regard to thermal expansion. Over the entire height of the building, expansion of several centimeters must be absorbed between summer and winter.

In the roof area, weather influences such as snow and ice act on the profile system. This was solved with an integrated snow guard. The sharp-edged building shape at the verge and eaves requires maximum precision and is also integrated into the profile system.

In the case of the railings, the architects Miller & Maranta’s demand and  expectation is “simple and functional”. This is reflected in the shape, the surface and especially in the railing infill. The bent raw construction consists of 1 inch tubes which are weld to a frame and then hot-dip galvanized. The raw construction is covered with a wire mesh.
